Young or old - mobility matters! So a painful hip, knee, or ankle at any age can dramatically impede a patient’s quality of life. Younger persons can find it particularly difficult, given the demands of study, sport & career. This may be compounded by the false, yet often widely held medical opinion, that joint replacement surgery consists only of interventions for the elderly. While this was once the case, as modern hip replacement emerged under the auspices of Sir John Charnley in the 1960s, things are very different today. The capacity of modern devices to deliver pain relief, mobility, & time with gratifying reassurance means much younger people can be confidently assisted. Registry results show that contemporary orthopaedic implants are now extremely durable.
Michael is a strong advocate of evidence based medicine and offers total hip and total knee replacement surgery with a preferential use of ODEP 10A implants (this means devices with a proven track-record). He has published numerous research articles on hip surgery, knee surgery and carpal tunnel surgery. He has taught other doctors in courses on the Early Management of Severe Trauma (EMST), Care of the Critically Ill Surgical patient (CCrISP) and fellow surgeons on how to perform hip replacement surgery. He reviews articles for the World Journal of Orthopaedics, & for Hip International.
Michael is a Fellow of both the Australian and the New Zealand Orthopaedic Associations (AOA & NZOA). He is also a Fellow of the Royal Australasia College of Surgeons (RACS) & the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd). He is a member of the New Zealand Hip Society, the British Hip Society (BHS) and the International Society of Hip Arthroscopy (ISHA). Michael’s interests outside work are primarily his family, several sports including tennis, golf, cycling, skiing & music.

Michaels Areas of Expertise:
Primary & Revision Total Hip Replacement:
Michael enjoys the coveted credential of being an Exeter Fellowship trained hip surgeon. He compliments this by offering the latest minimally invasive hip replacement approaches where appropriate. Sophisticated planning for cases & robotic techniques are important parts of his commitment to surgical excellence. Michael's doctoral thesis was on the vital subject of ‘optimising outcomes after total hip replacement’.
Hip arthroscopy and hip Preservation surgery:
Michael has undertaken training in London, Switzerland & Melbourne. He is pleased to discuss these important aspects of orthopaedics with patients & referrers.
Primary & Revision Total Knee Replacement:
Blending long-established surgical understandings with new planning & robotic techniques. This is Michael's favoured way of addressing those situations where need for a 'new knee' is identified. Following a protocol, based on both surgeon experience & industry innovation, is an important 'symbiosis'. The intention is to deliver the best knee replacement for patients.
Soft tissue surgery of the knee. Michael is able to offer arthroscopy procedures & meniscal repair surgery. He also undertakes ACL reconstruction for situations where ligament rupture has occurred. He has undertaken Post Fellowship training with David Young at the Melbourne Orthoapedic Group.
Foot and Ankle surgery: Ankle replacement is now well established in Australia. To further enhance his skills in this important sub-speciality Michael has benefited from Post Fellowship training with Dr Dean Pepper in Port Macquarie.
Trauma: Michael's private practice works on the basis of scheduled appointments & elective (booked) surgery. However, he also has a long public sector experience of acute & emergency situations. These generally arise from traumatic events such as motor car accidents or sporting injuries. Post Fellowship trauma training in Switzerland facilitated enhanced skills in this vital area of orthopaedics.
